Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD)

TADS are small anchors made of titanium and are used in specific cases. In some instances these devices can be much more efficient and can achieve quicker tooth movement. TADs can be used with your orthodontics braces or as an alternative to certain types of headgear.

How does the orthodontist place TADS?

The orthodontist will numb the gum tissue and jaw area with a strong anesthetic. Once the area if numb, the TAD will be placed into the jawbone directly through the gum tissue. Placement of this device is extremely quick and should not cause much pain. Many patients experience slight pressure at placement. After a few days, most patients can no longer feel the TAD. Once treatment is completed or when the device is no longer needed, the TAD will be removed. Removal only takes a few minutes and doesn’t cause any pain.

What can I do to relieve discomfort caused by my TAD?

If you do experience discomfort from your TAD, we recommend Ibuprofen to help reduce your pain. If your pain persists past a few days, please contact our office as soon as possible.

How to clean around TADS

You clean your TADs in the same manner that you clean your braces. We recommend bushing three times per day in order to maintain the health or your teeth and gums.
